All my life I been the underdog, but never been the victim Tryna find my own path cause I been fed up with the system Let some years pass, hoping I’d get hit up with a vision Feel redundant but it’s just cause I won’t let up on the mission The biggest thing I had to learn was patience, from waiting Had to work the day shift, caught up in the matrix Afraid to be complacent and miss my chance to make it Now I’m coming with the greatness to give the game a facelift People took advantage of my trust, for the wealth When you switch up on me that’s the side you stuck, choose it well I was down for a second, now I’m up to excel It’s out of body in the booth when I’m in touch, with myself I brought the truest feeling I watch the roof go missing My watch can't lose a minute Without me moving with it I seen your type before You and Judas twinning I think I'm through with wishing I wouldn't do it different No more hopes and dreams for me no more Untamed, unchained Run to glory relentlessly I’ll be short-changing myself if I gave in at all I'll give you all of my love until you want me, baby Can’t stop 'til Will C. is bigger than McDonalds My circle so tight, I’m watching who around us I feel like I’m Cena, knowing they can’t see me I knew it since I would burn my tapes on CD I feel like I’m Trina, knowing I’m the baddest I feel like I’m Michael, knowing I’m the baddest This the feeling back when 32 had it This ain’t no illusion but I got the magic My cousin grew up in DH, it was desolate You could call it arrested development They would call us anything except excellent Ain’t no hope when you grow a pessimist I stay so protected you thought I was celibate I’m killing these beats with an elegance These rappers impressionists full of embellishments Type to sell they soul to be relevant The smaller the room, the bigger the elephant I got roots to the street like the sediment My account only take hundreds, it’s prejudiced When you book me that’s just a prerequisite I got married to the game, we affectionate In my closet I got high fashion skeletons I open up like the mic was a therapist I kept it real from the genesis

about

On his debut album BURGUNDY, Will Cherry centers the music on the topic of grief and loss, with death and breakups being the driving inspiration. With burgundy being a metaphor for dried blood and an intangible source of inspiration all at once, the music isn't pigeonholed to only moody sounds, but instead shows the range of his talent, attention to detail and craftsmanship as an artist, writer, producer and engineer. With help from Yung Baby Tate, Lorine Chia, Freshie and more, Will builds a sonically enthralling world with this album.

Thank you to GOD, my mother, Big Gator Bossman, Dauphin Amir and So Be It. I want to briefly talk about the process from the very first idea to right now.

In February of 2016, after taking years off from being an artist, I got an idea for an album called ESCAPE. After seeing a film with a friend I hadn't hung out with in years, we had a great conversation that inspired me more than I had ever been inspired. She was actually going to be on the cover because of the inspiration she gave. That night, I wrote a song called "Open Letter" to be the intro for it. It was incredibly emotional for me because it was the first time I opened up about exactly how I was feeling in my head on a song. From there, we were on a roll and I had a song called "Change" with Mathaius, "Ghosts", "Down" with Rico and Fayaven and some other stuff.

After that, I decided to go with the concept of BURGUNDY instead and I had some of those songs still. Dauphin came on as an executive producer and started to help me find my sound and direction. I thought I completely had the album figured out and thought I was ready to release. I had a single called "Superbad" (ironically, the single we actually put out was a movie as well). I sent the second or third iteration of the album to Alexander Preston and he rightfully ripped apart. I thought it was dope but my ears hadn't developed yet, so him pointing out what I needed to work on made me a way better artist.

2017 was the time that I made a bulk of the songs. It was a strong period of development as an artist. Using melody became a strength and my flow became way stronger. Big Gator Bossman started managing me and advised me to hone in on my ability to create melodies and songs that everyone can enjoy. "Wine", "Flip", "Death Proof", "Grapevine", "My Type", "Froze" and "Perfect" were all made that year. That was when I first made music that I knew I actually had to be released. On January 1st of 2018, I did "Etta". That year I also made "Vancouver". "Trust" was made February of 2020. A lot of my creative energy the last couple years was spent on making music that will be coming after this album, and refining these songs to be as great as they can be. Across 10 songs, it's taken 176 mixes to get to this point.

I have to thank all of the people who contributed to the album. I dreamt of having an album with strings all over it and guitar and synth solos. The music reaching this point would not have been possible without every name in those credits, regardless of the size of their contribution. I want to do a million interviews and go more in depth on the process of specific songs but this is just a small piece of the context. I hope you can enjoy every moment on the album, from the lighthearted joints to the most personal and dark ones. I hope the message resonates because I feel like everyone can relate. My biggest goal with this is just to connect emotionally with anyone who listens and give them an enjoyable and memorable experience with my art. I hope it works. Bet on Cherry!
